Cold Bathroom in Neptune, NJ
Challenge
The homeowner in Neptune has a very cold bathroom. They called Dave Hoh's Home Comfort & Energy Experts to perform perform a comprehensive whole house assessment to find out what is causing comfort issues and wasting energy. This is completed by a certified energy professional using tools such as a blower door to identify how much air leaks into and out of a house, an infrared thermal camera to help identify hot and cold spots, insulation deficiencies and potential moisture issues.
Solution
We found the back of the bathroom medicine cabinet completely exposed to the attic, with no insulation. This means when the attic is 30 degrees in the winter the back of the cabinet is 30 degrees! In the summer attics can get upwards up 130 degrees, meaning the back of the cabinet gets roasting hot as well.
The fix was to sheath the vertical or kneewall with 2" poly board and air seal all the seams. The result is a well insulated wall, a properly protected medicine cabinet and a bathroom that doesn't freeze in the winter. This work was done in conjunction with additional attic upgrades. Call us to find out how we can help you solve comfort and energy problems! The great thing about making a home more comfortable, is that it also greatly reduces the amount of heating and cooling needed. These projects typically pay for themselves in energy savings!!
