In Asbury Park, NJ, a homeowner encountered discomfort in their loft due to its proximity to the garage attic, where an adjacent wall faces extreme attic temperatures. This wall divides a conditioned space (the loft) from an uninsulated attic area, resulting in pronounced temperature swings. During summer, hot air from the attic seeps through this wall, overheating the loft. Conversely, in winter, warmth escapes into the attic, causing discomfort and higher energy costs. This insulation deficiency not only wastes energy consistently but also compromises the homeowner's comfort and increases their utility bills.
Solution
We insulated the adjacent wall with SilverGlo foam boards to reduce heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. Then, we air sealed the attic including any gaps around the SilverGlo panels. After air sealing, we installed vent baffles, draft-blocked the decking, and added retaining walls to allow for attic storage. Finally, we blew in TruSoft cellulose insulation to an optimal R-value of R-60. The attic is now properly insulated, making the home or loft more comfortable and energy efficient.
This nice Loft was too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.
The Loft has an adjacent wall with a door leading to the attic. Unfortunately, this wall is allowing hot summer air to leak into the loft, and during winter, it's letting heat escape into the attic, causing the owner to pay more for their energy bills. As a result, the loft becomes excessively hot in the summer and uncomfortably cold in the winter.
We installed SilverGlo foam boards along the adjacent wall and attic door, creating an insulated barrier with a radiant surface to reflect heat during the warmer months. By air sealing the attic floor and sealing gaps in the adjacent wall, we've significantly reduced the intrusion of outside air and the escape of conditioned air-helping to keep the loft more comfortable year-round.
The left side of the adjacent wall was properly insulated using SilverGlo foam boards.
The left side of the attic features properly installed TruSoft cellulose insulation, along with a wooden retaining wall designed to create additional decking for storage.
The right side of the adjacent wall was properly insulated using SilverGlo foam boards.
The right side of the attic features properly installed TruSoft cellulose insulation, along with a wooden retaining wall designed to create additional decking for storage.
