Transforming a Vented Crawl Space in Colts Neck, NJ for a Warmer, More Efficient Home
Challenge
This Colts Neck, NJ homeowner had a vented crawl space that allowed cold outside air to leak into their home, resulting in chilly floors and drafty rooms. In summer, hot air and humidity also infiltrated the crawl space, making rooms uncomfortable and potentially leading to moisture issues like mold growth.
Solution
Installing SilverGlo foam boards along the crawl space's foundation walls helps insulate the home by addressing air leaks. Since cinder block walls are porous, they allow air to seep in, contributing to drafts. Blocking and sealing the vents with SilverGlo foam blocks prevents outside air from infiltrating the space. Additionally, spray foam is applied to the rim joists and the upper sections of the cinder blocks to seal any remaining gaps. Once the walls, ducts, and vents are properly sealed, a vapor barrier is installed in necessary areas, such as the dirt floor of the smaller crawl space section. With these improvements, the crawl space is now properly sealed, providing the homeowner with a more comfortable and energy-efficient home.
