Dense Packing Cold Nursery Room Over Garage in Little Silver, NJ
Challenge
This modern custom home was built in 2013, in Little Silver, NJ. Our homeowner’s newer custom home suffered from poor insulation. Typical complaints by our customers with rooms above a garage are cold floors and rooms. With a newborn in the nursery room above the garage, our customer had concerns about the fluctuating colder temperatures during the colder months here in NJ.
Solution
After inspecting this house our team at Dave Hoh’s Home Comfort & Energy Experts found no insulation in the garage ceiling’s joist bay. No insulation in the garage ceiling means the above room’s floors are exposed to the outside air. Cold air then seeps into the external walls, and then becomes trapped between the joist bays. The cold air then circulates across the floors resulting in the homeowner’s nursery room’s floors being too cold. We also noticed in the nursery room the ductwork was disconnected from the vent on the left side of the room. We simply reconnected the ductwork to have the proper ventilation in the nursery.
To eliminate the cold floors and cold room above the garage, we dense pack the garage ceiling joist bays with TruSoft Cellulose Insulation. The crew can accomplish this by first drilling holes into the garage ceiling between the joist bays. We then insert a long hose or tube into the holes to blow in TruSoft Cellulose Insulation and are dense packed into the floors above.
When we dense pack and blow in insulation into the floors this adds insulation value but this also stops airflow through the floors from air leaks.
Our team’s hard work eliminated our homeowner’s cold floor and cold nursery room. We now have warmer floors above, more comfortable rooms, quieter floors and less garage noises in the nursery. The homeowner’s nursery room is now safe from the cold elements and our customer now enjoys a lower heating bill.
