A homeowner in Fairhaven NJ had issues with their living room being cold and drafty. This was in a new and well built home! When our team inspected the home they found the fireplace chase called a bump out was a main source of cold outside air leaking into the conditioned living room space.
Solution
The remedy in this case was to open the fireplace bump out from outside and properly air seal and insulate the assembly around the metal fireplace box. This requires approved materials for the application. In this case we used Foamax rigid board insulation, metal flashing and fire caulk to reduce outside cold winter air from passing through into the living room causing comfort issues.

Our crew carefully removed the siding of the house in order to gain an access point into the fireplace bump out.
We are looking at the back of the fireplace or fireplace housing. This is where outside air enters into the house through the metal fireplace housing.
When we look at the top of the fireplace or fireplace housing we can see gaps and seams that need to be sealed because the outside air seeps through.
We have the exterior walls left and right of the fireplace housing insulated with fiberglass insulation. Fiberglass insulation does next to nothing from blocking outside air from entering the house.
Finally our team air seals all the seams and gaps with our orange ZypFoam sealant. Next we install our Foamax insulation panels onto the bump out walls. To eliminate any air from leaking into the house we also use our orange ZypFoam to seal the seams of the Foamax panels.
This last image is showing the back of the fireplace or fireplace housing. This picture is still in the production stage, but when complete our team will close and seal the access point of the fireplace bump out.
